Red Fern Mission: A Journey of Resilience - Hayden's Story and the Hope of a Doodle Companion

At Stokeshire Designer Doodles, we have the privilege of connecting families with the perfect four-legged companions. Every family has a unique story, and one that has touched our hearts deeply is Hayden’s.

In February 2024, Lyndsie and her husband faced the unimaginable when their 5-year-old daughter, Hayden, was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that left her paralyzed from the neck down. What began as a typical day turned into a life-altering experience as they watched their active, vibrant daughter lose her ability to move, breathe, and speak on her own. Hayden spent three months in the hospital on a ventilator, battling against overwhelming odds.

Despite her challenging diagnosis, Hayden’s resilience shone through. With unwavering determination, she faced grueling physical and occupational therapy sessions. She relearned how to move her arms, strengthen her core, and eventually took her first steps again. Her journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of perseverance.

Hayden’s family adopted the motto “Work Hard Like Hayden,” a daily reminder of their daughter’s fierce determination. This journey has changed them profoundly, teaching them the importance of hope and resilience. Throughout this process, Hayden has maintained an incredibly positive outlook, despite the physical and emotional toll her condition has taken.

In addition to the physical challenges, the financial strain has been significant. Lyndsie, a nurse practitioner, left her job to become Hayden’s home health nurse, while her husband has been on FMLA leave since Hayden’s hospitalization. With rising medical expenses, including a $60,000 life flight bill still under negotiation with insurance, the family’s finances have been stretched thin. Yet, they remain committed to giving Hayden the best life possible.

One thing that has brought Hayden pure joy in recent months is her interaction with their neighbor’s doodle. The moments she spends with this friendly dog have been some of the happiest she’s had since returning home. The joy and excitement she feels when visiting the neighbor’s dog inspired her family to apply for the Red Fern Mission, a scholarship program that offers deserving families the opportunity to welcome a specially chosen companion dog into their home.

For Hayden, a doodle would be more than just a pet—it would be a source of comfort, companionship, and hope. A calm, loving dog would help her navigate the challenges of recovery, offering emotional support during difficult days. As Hayden adjusts to life with a trach and g-tube, a loyal companion by her side would provide her with a sense of security and love that words cannot express.

Lyndsie and her husband envision a medium-sized doodle, ideally between 30 and 50 pounds, with a calm demeanor and hypoallergenic coat, as Hayden is allergic. They are drawn to the gentle, affectionate nature of Bernedoodles and Goldendoodles and believe a dog with these characteristics would be the perfect fit for their family. While they love the merle color, their primary focus is on finding a dog with the right temperament—a companion that would love Hayden unconditionally.

Hayden’s family dog, Posey, has always been indifferent to the children, but Hayden longs for a dog that would form a close bond with her. The idea of getting a puppy has been on the family’s mind for some time, especially after witnessing how much joy their neighbor’s doodle brought to Hayden. The family is eager to provide Hayden with a loyal companion who will offer her love, comfort, and positivity as she continues her journey toward recovery.

As Hayden was supposed to start kindergarten this year, the reality of delaying her school attendance has been difficult for the family. Watching her sister and friends go off to school while Hayden stays home is a tough pill to swallow. Having a dog by her side during this time would not only provide her with companionship but also give her a sense of responsibility and purpose throughout her day. Caring for a dog would empower Hayden, helping her feel capable and independent as she rebuilds her life.

The Red Fern Mission represents hope for Hayden and her family—a chance for her to experience the unconditional love of a loyal companion and to find comfort in the simple joys that a dog can bring. As Lyndsie so beautifully put it, Hayden’s journey is one of hard work, resilience, and heart. Just like in the story Where the Red Fern Grows, where the bond between a child and his dog is a testament to love and loyalty, Hayden’s new companion would be a bright light in her life.

At Stokeshire, we are honored to share in Hayden’s journey, and we believe that with the right dog by her side, she will continue to amaze us all with her strength and determination.
