What is a Phantom Bernedoodle?

A Phantom Bernedoodle is a specific type of Bernedoodle, which is a hybrid dog breed resulting from crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. The "phantom" in Phantom Bernedoodle refers to a specific coat color pattern.

Phantom Bernedoodles have a two-tone coat color pattern, typically consisting of a solid base color (such as black, brown, or cream) with distinct markings in a second color (usually tan or rust). These markings appear above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, on the chest, legs, and sometimes on other parts of the body.

The term "phantom" is often used in the context of various dog breeds to describe this specific coloration pattern. It adds an attractive and distinctive aesthetic to the Bernedoodle breed, which is already beloved for its intelligence, friendly disposition, and low shedding coat (due to the Poodle parentage).

Phantom in Bernedoodles: Unveiling the Mystique of Coat Colors

The Bernedoodle, a charming cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, captivates hearts with its teddy bear looks and diverse coat colors — among which the "Phantom" coloring is particularly sought after. But what does "Phantom" mean in the realm of dog coats, and how is this alluring pattern passed on to Bernedoodles?

The Genetics Behind Phantom Coat Coloring

Phantom coat coloring is distinguished by the presence of specific markings that are evocative of a Rottweiler's hallmark appearance. To understand how Bernedoodles get their Phantom coat, we must delve into canine genetics.

A Phantom Bernedoodle dons a predominantly black coat embellished with tan points typically appearing above the eyes, on the cheeks, beneath the tail, and on the legs.

Both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle carry these critical genes, although they may manifest differently in each breed. The Bernese Mountain Dog boasts its classic tri-color coat, marked by lush black fur with rich tan points and white. Meanwhile, Poodles can also carry the agouti gene, responsible for a variety of patterns, including Phantom.

When a Bernedoodle inherits both the kyky and atat, the stage is set for the Phantom pattern to emerge. This genetic combination gives rise to the tan points against a gleaming black background—a trait that echoes the refined beauty of its name: Phantom.

Breeding for the Phantom Coat Color

The Phantom Stokeshrie Designer Doodle is a dog breed with a primarily black coat that has tan points visible above the eyes, on the cheeks, beneath the tail, and on the legs. The appearance of this striking coat is governed by two critical genetic factors - the A-Loci (atat) and kyky genes, as well as the absence of sp and si genes.

Both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle carry these essential genetic elements, but they may express them differently within each breed. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a tri-color coat, which includes black fur, rich tan points, and white markings. Meanwhile, Poodles also have the genetic combination needed to produce the Phantom coat.

Breeding for the exquisite Phantom coloring in Stokeshrie Designer Doodles requires the careful selection of parent dogs that exhibit the desired genetic makeup. Breeders navigate a genetic labyrinth by leveraging the Bernese Mountain Dog's tri-color pattern and the Poodle's diverse genetic repertoire, which encompasses the necessary genes.

By thoughtfully pairing these two breeds, breeders can influence the likelihood of producing puppies showcasing the coveted Phantom coat. However, it is not guaranteed, as genetics are unpredictable. Successful breeding for this pattern demands expertise, patience, and a touch of serendipity.

The intricate dance of genetic inheritance ensures that each Stokeshrie Designer Doodle is unique, with Phantom-coated individuals occupying a special niche in the spectrum of coat varieties. Their regal markings not only captivate the eye but also narrate a deeper tale of heritage—a fusion of the Bernese Mountain Dog's dignified elegance and the Poodle's intricate genetic mosaic.

In essence, the Phantom coat coloring transcends mere aesthetics; it serves as a testament to the complexities of genetics. It epitomizes the harmonious synergy between nature and dedicated breeding, resulting in Stokeshrie Designer Doodles that are remarkable in lineage as they are in appearance. Whether lounging on a sofa or strutting proudly on a stroll, these Phantom-coated companions are enveloped in a genetic masterpiece, making them both a wonder and an enigma.

EXERCISE REQUIREMENTS

To keep Bernedoodles content and prevent boredom or obesity, they need both mental stimulation and regular exercise. With their low to medium energy level, they do not typically demand excessive exercise. They enjoy playful activities, walks, and can even make great jogging companions. Some Bernedoodles also have a fondness for swimming. However, it's important to remember that exercise needs may vary among individuals, so adapt to your dog's preferences and ensure they stay healthy and happy.

BERNEDOODLE TEMPERAMENT

Bernedoodles are often described as easygoing, playful, and loyal. While they can be a bit stubborn during training, they possess a social nature and thrive in the presence of their family. They dislike being left alone for extended periods and are known for their goofy and fun-loving personalities. Many people consider them the "class clown" of the dog world

LIFE EXPECTANCY

Bernese Mountain Dog - Brigitta

On average, Bernedoodles live between 10 and 18 years. This range can vary due to factors such as diet, exercise, genetics, and overall care. Generally, smaller dogs tend to have longer lifespans compared to larger breeds.

WHY CHOOSE A Phantom BERNEDOODLE?

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their good-natured and affectionate temperament. However, they have shorter lifespans, shed heavily, and can be stubborn. On the other hand, Poodles are non-shedding, have longer lifespans, and are highly intelligent and trainable. The combination of these breeds results in a smart and mellow dog with reduced shedding and an extended lifespan. If you adore Bernese traits but prefer a dog that sheds less and lives longer, a Bernedoodle might be the perfect choice for you!

GENERATIONS OF BERNEDOODLES

There are several generations of Bernedoodles:

1. F1 Bernedoodles: These are the offspring of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They have an equal mix of 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle. Reputable breeders typically use a standard or moyen Poodle for crossing with a Bernese.

2. F1b Bernedoodles: Resulting from crossing an F1 Bernedoodle back to a Poodle, F1b Bernedoodles are 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese. They should not be confused with "Reverse" F1b Bernedoodles, which are the product of an F1 Bernedoodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog.

3. F2 Bernedoodles: These dogs come from crossing two F1 Bernedoodles. Although they are usually close to 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle, individual puppies within a litter may vary in their traits.

4. Multigenerational Bernedoodles: Multigens are the result of breeding two of the aforementioned generations. Their percentages can lean toward either parent breed. When bred

carefully and with consideration, multigens tend to have more predictable traits, including temperament, coat type, and shedding factor.

SHEDDING CHARACTERISTICS OF BERNEDOODLES

The shedding tendencies of Bernedoodles vary depending on their generation:

- F1 Bernedoodles: They are a suitable choice for those with mild allergies, but some shedding can be expected due to their 50/50 cross. Most F1 Bernedoodles have low shedding, but some may shed moderately or not at all.

- F1b Bernedoodles: With a higher percentage of Poodle, F1b Bernedoodles are a great choice for people with allergies. Most of them shed very little or not at all.

- F2 Bernedoodles: Shedding in F2 Bernedoodles can be unpredictable due to the influence of the Bernese being IC (improper coat) affected. They can produce puppies with no shedding, low shedding, or high shedding. Some F2 Bernedoodles have doodle coats (furnished), while others lack the facial beard and doodle coat (unfurnished).

- Multigenerational Bernedoodles: Our multigen Bernedoodles typically have very low to non-shedding coats. However, intentional pairings may occasionally produce unfurnished coats.

COAT TYPES
Bernedoodles come in a variety of coat types, including:

1. Straight Coat: Some Bernedoodles have a straight coat, similar to their Bernese Mountain Dog parent. This type of coat is typically low to moderate shedding and can be found in a multigenerational litter. These may resemble the looks of an Old English Sheepdog and will still require grooming.

2. Wavy Coat: Wavy-coated Bernedoodles have soft waves in their fur. This coat type is often low shedding and can have a slightly curly appearance. This is most common in a first Generation Cross. (F1)

3. Curly Coat: Bernedoodles with a curly coat have tight curls or ringlets in their fur. Curly coats are usually non-shedding or very low shedding. We see this in our F1B litters where some will have a more poodle-like coat. We recommend these litter for those who may have allergies to dogs that shed.

4. Unfurnished Coat: Unfurnished Bernedoodles have a straight, Bernese-like coat instead of a doodle coat. They may have minimal to moderate shedding and are not recommended for individuals with allergies. Unfurnished and Straight coats will look very similar, however, an unfurnished coat will not require grooming, but will shed.

Each coat type has its own unique look and maintenance requirements. It's important to consider your preferences and any allergies when choosing a Bernedoodle with a specific coat type.
